Joe Winter’s pottery expresses an aesthetic style that strikes a fluid balance between ancient and modern crafts. He uses four different firing techniques to create his work; Raku, gas fired stoneware, wood fired stoneware and wood fired salt glazed stoneware. Each of these firing techniques involves fire directly interacting with the clay and glaze. Fire of course can incredibly destructive, but Joe is most interested in fire as a creative tool for crafting pots with beauty, depth, and a unique character. This is an endless process of discovery that keeps Joe intensely interested in developing a diverse collection of functional and decorative pottery.
